Growing up on land, and often growing our own fruit and veggies comes with a lot of different ways to clean your produce from the tiny microscopic insects that make it hard to see. A quick rinse will not cut it, and with this I will even apply this method to my store bought strawberries.
Shopping list
- ½ Tsp Salt
- White Vinegar
- Ice Cubes
Directions
- Take a large bowl, place your strawberries inside, add a ½ teaspoon of salt of your choosing, along with a cap full of white vinegar on top of the strawberries.
- Add room temperature water/tap water to the bowl with all ingredients inside, fill until water covers the strawberries.
- Take hand and mix water, moving the strawberries around a couple of times.
- Then let the bowl with ingredients sit for about 20 minutes
- At the 20 minute mark take a tray of ice cubes and apply them to the bowl with the water and strawberries and mix them around.
- Let them sit for an additional 10 minutes, you will be amazed how ice cubes can perk your strawberries up, just as if you pulled them off the plant.
- After the 10 minute ice bath remove your strawberries and rinse under cold water
- Then place in a bowl with a paper towel, or a fruit bowl that allows it to capture extra moisture.
They are now ready to eat, or to be placed in the refrigerator.
I am a curious person and always spend time investigating the water after I remove the strawberries to see what had fallen off, especially when I had store bought them. I will forever do this to my strawberries.
