How We Clean Our Strawberries

Growing up on land, and often growing our own fruit and veggies comes with a lot of different ways to clean your produce from the tiny microscopic insects that make it hard to see. A quick rinse will not cut it, and with this I will even apply this method to my store bought strawberries.

Shopping list

  • ½ Tsp Salt
  • White Vinegar
  • Ice Cubes

Directions

  1. Take a large bowl, place your strawberries inside, add a ½ teaspoon of salt of your choosing, along with a cap full of white vinegar on top of the strawberries.
  2. Add room temperature water/tap water to the bowl with all ingredients inside, fill until water covers the strawberries.
  3. Take hand and mix water, moving the strawberries around a couple of times.
  4. Then let the bowl with ingredients sit for about 20 minutes
  5. At the 20 minute mark take a tray of ice cubes and apply them to the bowl with the water and strawberries and mix them around.
  6. Let them sit for an additional 10 minutes, you will be amazed how ice cubes can perk your strawberries up, just as if you pulled them off the plant.
  7. After the 10 minute ice bath remove your strawberries and rinse under cold water
  8. Then place in a bowl with a paper towel, or a fruit bowl that allows it to capture extra moisture.

They are now ready to eat, or to be placed in the refrigerator.

I am a curious person and always spend time investigating the water after I remove the strawberries to see what had fallen off, especially when I had store bought them. I will forever do this to my strawberries.
