Hello Oklahoma

Last Sunday we took a spontaneous day trip to Oklahoma City, with no agenda, and no idea what to expect.

One thing you will begin to learn about Britt and her husband Austin is that they have a sense for travel, and a love for adventure. It started early on in their dating, and now it is a passion they love to share with their son Carter.

Oklahoma City is only about two and half hours from Dallas. A quick little day trip to have a good time, experience a new adventure, and enjoy some good food.

If you happen to have a College Football fanatic in the family like Britt’s husband. Norman, OK is not a place you would want to miss. As we walked around the campus of University of Oklahoma, we walked around in awe of the architecture, the campus, and Britt’s husband’s favorite part, the football stadium. That college football stadium puts some of these NFL stadiums to shame to be completely honest.

With only an additional 20 to 30 minutes you will make it to Downtown Oklahoma City. We happened to stumble across Bricktown Oklahoma. A man made canal that opened in 1999 and has now become a major tourist attraction for Oklahoma City. Let me just say that after speaking with some of the locals that were born and raised there. We could see that they are so proud of how much this has grown, and to be a part of the community they have built. I would have to say it was quite impressive to see myself.

Everyone there found it so strange to hear that we had been visiting from Dallas, as everyone that lives there likes to escape and come to see Dallas for a day trip. I find that perspective can be so crazy to see from the other side at times.

It’s a family friendly place, they offer boat rides through the canal, a putt putt golf course, several restaurants, a baseball stadium, incredible public art, and shopping with so much more.

While we were there we happened to take a canal boat ride. We found it to be very affordable for a tourist attraction. $13 for an adult and $4 for a child under 6. We enjoyed sitting back, relaxing, and learning about the history of Bricktown.

Such as did you know where the name “Sooner’s” came from. The famous phrase known as “Boomer Sooner”. The phrase came from the land run of 1889.

Sooner’s were known as the cheaters of the land race. One’s who jumped the gun, and claimed their stake in the land by not playing by the rules.

We finished the trip off with a delicious Cajun dinner on the canal at Bourbon St. Cafe. With a Blues vibe, live music, and amazing coconut shrimp with the most incredible mango dip I have ever had!

We look forward to going back, and exploring even more of what Oklahoma has to offer.

We hope that you and your family have the best time exploring Oklahoma, and be sure to tag us at #SSM or #SimplySouthernMama
